Detroit Symphony Orchestra Banish Winter Blahs with Tango Bandoneon, Chamber Music Yoga Class

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra invites you to bring your dancing shoes and your yoga mats to two new offerings in their "Mix @ The Max" concert series, presented in the Music Box space at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

On Tuesday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m., virtuoso accordionist Peter Soave will join forces with a Detroit Symphony Orchestra string quartet to present a fiery, tango-inspired performance including works by Astor Piazzolla and other masters of the form.

Dancing is encouraged.

Soave is recognized worldwide as the foremost master of the bandoneon and concert accordion. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony and many other ensembles in the U.S. and around the world.

Guests are further encouraged to arrive at 6:00 p.m. for drinks and mingling. WDET's Alex Trajano will be the evening's host.

On Sunday, January 26 at 10:30 a.m., Yoga Shelter instructor and DSO librarian Ethan Allen will lead the first ever "Om @ The Max," a yoga class accompanied by live chamber music. A DSO string quartet will serenade Allen's hour-long presentation with expertly curated repertoire designed to match the rhythm of each yoga flow.

Following the class, students are invited to recharge with a raw juice bar and healthy snacks served in the atrium.

Allen, who has been the DSO's librarian since 2005, was first introduced to yoga as a means of injury recovery but soon learned that yoga develops the mind and spirit just as much as the body. Since then, he has been a devoted practitioner, having completed the Yoga Shelter Life and Teacher training program in 2011.

Allen currently teaches at the Yoga Shelter in Grosse Pointe and downtown Detroit and travels often to India to study yoga philosophy with Swami Parthasarathy at the Vedanta Academy.

Known for his dynamic flows and knowledge of yoga philosophy, his classes help students achieve their higher goals by working through the barriers that prevent them from reaching the ideal version of themselves.

"Mix @ the Max" is presented by the DSO and WDET 101.9 FM.
