Marilyn Horne's 80th Birthday Celebration Will Feature Renée Fleming, Samuel Ramey, Barbara Cook and Other Star Vocalists

Legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne will be honored on her 80th birthday with a song recital at Carnegie Hall, featuring performances by many of her colleagues, on Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Samuel Ramey and Frederica von Stade will host the "Marilyn Horne Song Celebration" in Carnegie's Zankel Hall. The evening's singers include soprano Renée Fleming, vocalist Barbara Cook, mezzo-sopranos Jamie Barton and Isabel Leonard, countertenor David Daniels, tenor Piotr Beczała and many others.

The concert is open to the public, but tickets are going fast. More information is available at carnegiehall.org.

This concert is part of The Song Continues, an annual series of workshops and recitals at Carnegie led by Horne.

This year, Horne will be joined by another celebrated mezzo-soprano, Christa Ludwig, and pianist Martin Katz, who has performed and recorded regularly with many of the world's top singers. These three distinguished artists will present master classes for talented young singers and pianists during the series.

Their master classes are open to the public, but again, tickets are going fast. Check here for ticket availability.

Horne has received numerous awards and accolades during her five-decade career in the world's opera houses and recital halls. Her international success in coloratura mezzo-soprano roles led to the revival of many of Rossini's and Handel's greatest operas.

Horne founded The Song Continues series, designed to explore the song repertoire through workshops and concerts, with the goal of encouraging, supporting and preserving the art of the vocal recital.

Here she is in "Or La Tromba" from Handel's Rinaldo, an aria that is a contest between trumpets and voice for florid ornamentation.
