New York Festival of Song's "NYFOS Next" Presents the Music of Mark Adamo and Friends

The New York Festival of Song's forward-looking NYFOS Next series will open its 2013-14 season with "Mark Adamo & Friends" on Tuesday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m.

NYFOS Next is a series of free concerts that spotlight today's composers, lyricists and interpreters of modern song. The series finds a new home this season at the recital hall of Opera America's National Opera Center, a newly-designed facility that is ideally suited to NYFOS Next's intimate and relaxed atmosphere.

Composer-librettist Mark Adamo will curate the January 28 program, featuring both his own music and that of his colleagues and friends--including John Bucchino, Michele Brourman, Conrad Winslow, Mark Baechle and librettist Royce Vavrek.

In describing the evening's program, Adamo quotes Joan Didion: "We tell ourselves stories in order to live."

"Didion's observation forms the backbone of this program," Adamo explains further.

"Two of these composers (Conrad Winslow and Mark Baechle) and one of these lyricists (Royce Vavrek) make their homes in the concert world, while two other composer-lyricists (John Bucchino and Michele Brourman) are more often heard in theaters and cabarets," says Adamo.

"Their circles overlap a center in which characters in crisis--remembered or imagined, objectively observed or passionately ventriloquized--generate vividly human song."

The evening's performers include baritone Joshua Jeremiah and pianists John Bucchino and Michael Barrett. Barrett is also NYFOS' associate artistic director.

Having risen to prominence with his critically acclaimed opera Little Women, Adamo premiered a new song cycle last season, The Racer's Widow, as well as his latest opera, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, commissioned by San Francisco Opera.

Tickets for NYFOS Next programs are free, although seating is limited and reservations are required.
