John Lurie, Lounge Lizards and 'Bear Surprise' Creator, Releases New LP Via Amulet Records

Perhaps Classicalite has introduced you to John Lurie before: The Lounge Lizards, star of Jim Jarmusch films like Stranger Than Paradise and Down By Law, whacky television fisherman on his show Fishing with John, or visual artist/accidental creator of the viral meme Bear Surprise.

The Lurie mind may have hit capacity, or so one would think.

The absurd comedian-gone-actor-gone-musician-gone-painter has maintained a prolific status since his inception with avant-garde-jazz/no-new-wave group the Lounge Lizards in 1978. And on January 17, the artist will release a treasure trove of unreleased, never-before-heard live recordings and out-of-print studio sessions via Amulet Records.

The sessions relive the lure of Lurie's Lounge Lizard era, where he reflects on the magic that accompanied the trio in the heat of their studio and live takes.

"The three of us got together to try and write stuff for my band the Lounge Lizards," remarks Lurie. "But what happened between Billy, Calvin and I was magical. After about a year of playing live it really came together."

"There is something so unique and beautiful about this music. I don't think there is anything else like it," he continues.

The Invention of Animals - LP is up for pre-order on the Amulet website. Those pre-orders ship January 17.

Below, you'll find John and the Lounge Lizards at Berlin's Quartier Latin Club as but a mere preview.
