Ode to Apple: Andante Media Releases Free 'ClassiCal' App for iPhone, Beware of $50 Subscription Pitfalls

Andante Media, a German music publisher and one of the largest European independent rights owners, announced the release of a new iPhone app that celebrates the birthdays of composers of all kinds--big and small, heavyweights to new contenders.

The app, ClassiCal, is one of the newer apps gone to market that features such a breadth of composers.

"ClassiCal is kind of like those chocolate eggs for kids with a surprise toy in the middle--only it's for lovers of classical music", says Diane Ziegler, the company's owner and publishing director.

The music calendar offers a piece of handpicked music every day from the extensive Andante archives.

Recently, the service offered an intricate, enchanting fourth movement of the Dvorak's New World Symphony performed by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Ljublijana under Anton Nanut.

Other features include a seven-day free access trial with complete details about the pieces, composers, conductors, orchestras and solo artists in high-quality audio.

After seven days, even post-trial, the app remains full functional. The calendar will keep showing composer anniversaries and the piece of the day, but adding content to your library will skyrocket to a "nominal" $44.99 for the year.

But, for seven days, you can reap the app for all it's worth.

Their latest feature, Carl Czerny, turned 223 and his birthday was quite well done. To wit, here is his Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 214.
