Tom Hiddleston is one of the most hottest up and comers in Hollywood today. The Loki actor's latest film, Thor 2: The Dark World, comes out today on Blu Ray. The Disney Prince recently opened up about his inspirations for the character, including everything from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's original comics, to the works of William Shakespeare. Hiddleston recently starred as the title character in Coriolanus. However, his next venture is quite the departure from the villainous and tragic roles he has become known for. Instead, Hiddleston will playing with Kermit and pals in the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted.
In a recent sit down interview with The Huffington Post Uk, Hiddleston talked about how he got ready to play Loki by combing through decades of comics:
“I read all the comics, all the way back to Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. I also read J Michael Stracynzki's most recent reworking, as well as the Walt Simonson comics. I read the Norse myths, and I listened to Wagner because Loki turns up in the Ring Cycle. [Thor director] Kenneth Branagh and I also stole from Shakespeare because Loki is like Iago [from Othello]. He’s like Macbeth, and he’s like Edmund in King Lear. He seems like a character of such enormous dimensions and with so many interesting shades. The script that I read was an origin story for both Thor and Loki, and I think his mischievous aspects were only starting to come about towards the end of that first film.”
Shakespeare, of course, is something that Hiddleston knows a lot about. The actor recently portrayed the title role in Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse in London.
The critically acclaimed production recently received a rarely award theatrical distribution. This show was only the second in Donmar Warehouse history to receive such an honor.
However, Hiddleston’s next film is a far cry from Shakespeare. The versatile actor will play the part of The Great Escapo in the upcoming Muppets movie, Muppets Most Wanted.
Thor 2: The Dark World is available on Blu Ray release today. Muppets Most Wanted comes to theaters on March 21.
