If you're an artist like Bartholomäus Traubeck, slamming tree trunks onto your weighted Rega turntable isn't a foreign concept.
No, it's just another installation.
Traubeck's newest is called Years--a converted record player that can play cross-sectional pieces taken from a tree trunk (with grooves and lines resembling, you guessed it, a record).
Hmm, interpretation at its finest? A true ecology of sound?
It's not necessarily nature's truest music because the device takes in data via a PlayStation Eye Camera and a stepper motor attached to the control arm, which is then transcribed in Ableton Live.
Interpretation, maybe, but it's definitely a pretty nice device that can garner sounds from Mother Earth.
And, in my opinion, that sounds a helluva lot more interesting than similar ones from Mr. Reich.
