On Saturday Oct. 13 classical music cellist Yo-Yo Ma will be joined by his Silk Road Ensemble as they are set for an 8 p.m. performance at the home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Center. Tickets for this event start off at $55 and can rise to as much as $140.
Joining Mr. Ma on stage will be the 15 other members of the Silk Road Ensemble which include; Jonathan Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen on violin while Nicholas Cords will be on the viola.
The other cellists in the group are Mike Block and Eric Jacobsen. Jefferey Beecher will be on the contrabass and Kayhan Kalhor will play the kemancheh.
The pipa will be played by Wu Man and Sandeep Das will orchestrate the tabla. Cristina Pato will play the gata and piano while Kojiro Umezaki will play the shakuhachi and Wu Tong will operate the sheng the bawu respectively.
The percussion section of the orchestra will be handled by the trio of Jospeh Gramley, Shane Shanahan and Mark Suter.
On the night the Silk Road Ensemble program will feature the newly commissioned work by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, "Sacred Signs," which was inspired by Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" celebrates the ballet's 100th anniversary according to cso.org program notes.
The Silk Road orchestra is the brain child of their leader Yo-Yo Ma and was created in 1998. The ensemble has done notable collaborations with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the past and will be touring along with Yo-Yo Ma at various times of the classical music season.
