Boston Symphony Orchestral Plays Debussy, Martin & Rachmaninoff At The Boston Symphony Hall

On Thursday Oct. 18 the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will offer viewers at the Boston Symphony Hall in Massachusetts a night of Debussy, Martin and Rachmaninoff. This event will begin at 8 p.m. and will feature the debut performance of Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky with the BSO. Viewers can see further renditions of this event on Oct. 19, 20 and on Oct. 23 with ticket prices ranging from $30 to $114 on the Oct. 18 event. 

Joining Lugansky on the night will be the Boston Symphony Orchestra and their Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit. Some of the highlighted members of the ensemble are Elizabeth Rowe the flutist, John Ferrillo the oboe player, William R. Hudgins on clarinet and Richard Svoboda the bassoonist. 

Other featured musicians from the Boston outfit include James Sommerville the horn player, Thomas Rolfs the trumpeter and Toby Oft on trombone.

The Oct. 18 event that will start at 8 p.m. will end approximately 9:55 p.m. with the ensemble playing first the works of Debussy beginning with "Symphonic Fragments from The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian," from this piece they will play.

"The Court of Lilies (Prelude)" followed by "Dance of Ectasy and Finale to Act I," continuing with "The Passion," ending off the Frenchman's work with "The Good Shepherd."

The works of Martin will follow Debussy with the orchestra then playing Martin's "Concerto for Seven Wind Instruments, Timpani, Percussion, and String Orchestra" in Allegro, Adagietto and Allegro vivace. This piece will include distinctive performances from Rowe, Ferrillo, Hudgins, Sommerville, Rolfs, Oft and Genis.    

Charles Dutoit will then lead Nikolai Lugansky through the work of Rachimaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 3, Opus 30," in Alllegro ma non tanto, Intermezzo: Adagio and Alla breve.
