Giant Eyeball Found on Beach Belongs To Swordfish

The gigantic eyeball that washed ashore on a Floridian beach has been confirmed to have belonged to a swordfish instead of that of a gigantic squid experts had thought previously.

The eyeball according to Florida's State and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on Monday was cut out of a swordfish caught by a deep-sea angler last week.

An inquisition on what creature the eyeball belonged to was made and the Joan Herrera, curator of collections at the agency's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg said, according to CNN the organ did indeed belong to a swordfish "based on straight cuts on the bone around the eyeball.

Experts also determined the origin according to the size, the color and structure. They also think the organ was cut out and then thrown overboard where a beach goer stumbled upon it on Pompano Beach.

The giant squid that experts thought eye could have belong to, has a range that encompasses all the world's oceans. The species can be found near continental and island slopes in the North Atlantic in places like Newfoundland and in North Pacific around the waters of Japan and also in the southern oceans of the world.

The Swordfish is a highly migratory fish and can weigh in at half a ton and prefers to feed to in colder regions during the summer. The creature belongs to the billfish family that includes the like of the sailfish and the marlin.

The huge bill is used for slashing many of its prey animals and because of its size and strength it is highly prized by sports fisherman.
