Miss Her When She's Gone: Anna Kendrick Brings the Musical Stage to the Saturday Night Live, Numbers Suffered...But Weekend Update Did Not

The irreverence of Louis C.K. brought a much needed change to the typical Saturday Night Live mediocrity (yeah, the seasons have been downhill ever since Chevy).

And yet, a different mood swept last Saturday's stagefloors, hosting not just an adorable little songstress but also a welcome revisit to musical theater--all performed live on TV.

With her last radio single, Kendrick showed that her pipes were more than fitting for large musical numbers, and her presence laid claim to a unique persona (that's usually present in her wonderfully witty tweets).

OK, so her monologue may have paled in comparison to C.K's. And the hampered cues and stage wanderings of the otherwise "unusual" cast members (Kyle Mooney is, by all means, a weird dude with an actual funny side) may have downgraded her overall score.

However, some of the sketches weren't too bizarre or terrible to sit through. For instance, Weekend Update upped its game with visits from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and, umm, George R. R. Martin.

The wonderful people at Gothamist have thrown up some photos and videos from the night; do have a look.

One segment not copyrighted is that kind of cloying monologue, but we have it for you all the same below.
