"American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood will play in a redone version of the hit Musical "The Sound of Music," according to playbill.com.

The rehash of this classic is being done by NBC and is set to for near the holiday period in 2013 according to the Playbill with the media company  recruiting the producing duo of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron for the piece.

"Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement. "She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist."

Both Zadan and Meron were full of praise for the singing star who has sold 15 million albums worldwide and thinks her quality will make reel in a new audience to this old classic.

"We're thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of "The Sound of Music live," said Zadan and Meron, "and having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have. It's a particular joy to us as producers to see this amazing artist stretch into new territory with this classic musical."

Ted Chapin multiple Tony award winner also weighed in on Underwood's appointment. "To have a star like Carrie Underwood perform Maria in The Sound of Music - and in such a very special and unique production - is exciting beyond words," said Chapin.

For those unfamiliar "The Sound of Music," was the original telling of the von Trapp story in Nazi occupied Austria as told by Maria von Trapp. The film was done in the 1960s and was directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The music was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

The musical saw a nun from a nearby abbey becoming the governess for the widower Captain von Trapp's children. They fall in love with the pair trying to negotiate to safety in WWII Austria.
