Tommy Chong pro pot activist, actor and comedian says that the legalization of marijuana in two states last month will see the rejuvenation of the pro pot movement according to Yahoo News.
"Washington and Colorado are just the toe into the water," Chong said in an interview on Current TV. "The whole body's following."
The actor is best known for his role in the film "Up in Smoke," that also starred "Cheech" Marin. Chong believes that the legalisztion in the two states so far will see the flood gates open with other parts of the country following and claims that Drug Enforcement Administration will cease to exist very soon.
"It's going to empty the jails, and we're probably going to disband the DEA," said Chong.
Chong was jailed for nine months in 2003 for selling bongs and marijuana pipes through his company, Nice Dreams Enterprises according to Yahoo.
Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana for recreational use. Washington, according to businessweek.com, will let persons 21 years and older to purchase small quantities of the drug.
A buyer in that state can have one ounce of the drug from a licensed retailer. While in Colorado one can purchase an ounce of weed and are allowed to have six plants growing in private secure areas.
Allen St. Pierre executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana said. "It's very monumental. No state has ever done this. Technically, marijuana isn't even legal in Amsterdam."
The National Conference of State Legislatures say states like California, Alaska, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada since 1972 have tried to legalize the plant all ending in failure.
