Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen has gone digital with the release of a new app called "The Orchestra," which was released for the iPad and is available on the App store for $13.99.
Salonen released the app on Dec. 6, along with the help of Philharmonia, Rite Digital, Music Sales and Touch Press.
Salonen's website describes the App as "an interactive exploration of orchestral music and instruments gives users an unprecedented view of how classical music is made."
The new application pulls sources from the likes of Hadyn and his "Symphony No. 6." The app also features Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique," Debussy's "Prélude à l'après midi d'un faune," Mahler's Symphony No. 6, Stravinsky's "The Firebird," Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, and Salonen's own Violin Concerto, featuring violinist Leila Josefowicz according to Salonen's website.
To go along with such selections "The Orchestra," features high-quality films of eight performances viewed from the vantage point of the conductor and from the most active players and instrumental sections in each piece.
Consumers who have got their hands so far have only good things to say about the interactive app.
