On Saturday, Notre Dame and Northwestern University will face each other for the first time since Northwestern’s famous upset win against ND in 1995. Perhaps the most memorable play in that game involved NU's Dave Beazley running for a touchdown, straight into the Fighting Irish marching band.

If sports didn't exist, we would have to find some other activity to focus our energies on as a community. It seems to be a deep-seated need in the human psyche to engage in one meaningful, shared activity. And I'm wondering if there was a time when music could have been that shared activity, instead of sports. Did we miss our opportunity?
