'Minnesota Orchestra Launches Career of Young Composers

Seven young composers got the opportunity of a lifetime this week, when the Minnesota Orchestra performed their work as part of its Composer Institute. According to the Institute's Director, Kevin Puts, emerging talents run into the catch-22 of not getting a chance to write for an orchestra until they have already proven themselves capable of doing so, but now at least 7 out of 150 applicants will be able to potentially launch their careers thanks to Minnesota Orchestra's Composer Institute. For New York fans of the orchestra, Music Director Osmo Vänskä will be leading the group in all-Sibelius program at Carnegie Hall -- their first concert there in five-years.

    Osmo Vanska will conduct the Minnesota Orchestra in the eighth annual Future Classics Concert Series. The concert will feature seven of the top emerging composers of today. The concert will take place Friday January 29th at 8 PM at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis. Tickets range from $20 to $40 dollars and the show will be hosted by former Portland, Oregon alum Fred Child. All seven composers will be present to introduce their work
  • 'Marin Alsop to Conduct Cuba's Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional for Havana's 500th Anniversary

    Perhaps this is one more piece of evidence to support the mended relationship between the United States and Cuba. Marin Alsop, music director of both the Baltimore and São Paulo Symphony Orchestras, will conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba in celebration of Havana's quincentenary.
