'St. Thomas Choir Premieres ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’ in NYC

Friday, March 18, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys presents the New York p premiere of 'Seven Last Words from the Cross' by James MacMillan, along with 'The Last Discourse' and Svyati by Sir John Tavener and 'Quemadmodum' by John Taverner at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, One West 53rd Street. New York, NY. Orchestra of St. Luke's will be conducted by Guest Conductor David Hill. Soloists for this evening will be Sherezade Panthaki, soprano and Glenn Miller, bass.

    While it stands to reason that Handel’s 'Messiah' -- with its continued circulation and worldwide appreciation -- would go on to refine itself over the centuries, the St. Thomas Choir of Men & Boys and the Concert Royal have yet to falter on their annual tradition: the pillar Christmas mass, a full-length two-and-a-half hour arrangement of 'Messiah', performed for its encore act on December 10th at St. Thomas Church.

    On Thursday, November 12th, the St. Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, performing with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, gave a stunning performance of Mozart's unfinished, but nonetheless incomparable 'Requiem in D minor', and Haydn's 'Missa in Angustiis' (the Nelson Mass) at St. Thomas church. Also joining the ensemble were four renowned soloists: Soprano Katharine Dain, Mezzo-Soprano Brenda Patterson, Tenor Dann Coakwell and Bass-Baritone Charles Perry Sprawls. The magnificent caverns of Manhattan's 1914 Episcopal church bellowed with the majesty of these perennial works in concerted memory of John Gavin Scott (1956-2015), the parish's resident organist and music director who sadly passed away this past August.
