  • 'Smithsonian, Sheet Music Plus Collaborate to Sell Rare, Historic Music

The online retailer of music manuscripts, Sheet Music Plus, has teamed up with the Smithsonian Institution to sell digital versions of the scores from the Smithsonian's collection. This will include 400 titles that went online this week, including heavies like Liszt, Berlin and Harry Tierney. In the running with more than 100,000 other titles in the Sam DeVincent collection of illustrated American sheet music, the works were donated to the Smithsonian in 1998. They were chosen, per "The New York Times," "For their cultural or historical significance." "There is early ragtime, several versions of the 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' and turn-of-the-century military marches dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt. Patriotic anthems from several war eras also abound, with titles like 'I Will Give My Life to Uncle Sam, but I'll Leave My Heart with You,'" it concluded. And as always, part of the profits from the sheet-music sales will go to support the Smithsonian's archival work. Also, to note, the entire DeVincent collection is available to researchers, free upon request, at the archives.
