The Manhattan Theatre Club has officially announced that Bug, Tracy Letts's early psychological thriller, is making its long-awaited Broadway debut this winter with Carrie Coon reprising her role as Agnes White.
Directed by David Cromer, the Broadway transfer features the full cast from the acclaimed 2021 Steppenwolf Theatre staging, including Namir Smallwood as Peter, Randall Arney as Dr. Sweet, Jennifer Engstrom as R.C., and Steve Key as Jerry Goss. Previews begin December 17 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, leading up to a January 8, 2026 opening.
Bug, first premiered in London in 1996 and known for its gripping exploration of paranoia, conspiracy theories, and psychological breakdown, centers on Agnes, an isolated cocktail waitress, who becomes enmeshed with Peter, a drifter whose delusions spiral dangerously.
Coon's association with the role dates back to the Steppenwolf run. Her Broadway reappearance in Bug marks her return to the Main Stem. The play, penned by her husband Tracy Letts, a Pulitzer and Tony winner, now finds a wider stage for its potent intimacy.
Thematically, Bug taps into timely currents of fear, isolation, and conspiratorial anxieties, making it strikingly relevant in today's socio-political landscape. MTC's Artistic Director highlighted the production's capacity to spark dialogue and confront unseen societal forces.
