Sheamus vs. Cesaro: US Champion Sheamus Successfully Defends Title at Night of Champions Against Swiss Superman

Last night US Champion Sheamus successfully defended his title against the Swiss Superman Cesaro at WWE's Pay-Per-View event, Night of Champions. In perhaps one of the most exciting matches of the night, Sheamus and Cesaro delivered a mixture of grappling and brawling that had fans in the arena and at home jumping out of their seats.

While the Swiss Superman and the Irish Brawler brought the fight to Nashville last night, the surrounding drama was more about the match than the US title. The US Championship is something like the redheaded stepchild of WWE Gold. This has much less to do with the talent that has worn the gold, and more to do with the booking.

Instead of providing a stepping stone to the Intercontinental Championship and the World Title, often times the US Champ gets lost in the shuffle. Sheamus has only defended the title a handful of times since winning the belt in May, and he's lost a bunch of non-title matches.

But after last night's match, both Sheamus and Cesaro came out of it looking stronger. Though Cesaro could have benefited greatly from a title win, the fierce battle for the gold at Night of Champions may have elevated the status of the often forgotten US Belt.

Both Sheamus and Cesaro have recently set their sights on the more prestigious IC Championship, but the Miz and Dolph Ziggler have a hot feud right now which revolves around the belt. By elevating the US title, Sheamus and Cesaro can remain relevant.
