Ferry's idea for the album came out of his fascination of the time between the wars which was known as 'The Jazz Age.' On the album Ferry made all the songs in their instrumental reinterpretation.

Ferry explains, "A lot of the music I listen to nowadays is instrumental," he explains "and I wanted to let my songs have a different life, a life without words."

For this album Ferry put together The Bryan Ferry Orchestra comprised of many great jazz players from his past album titled As Time Goes By, along with his musical director Colin Good. Good and Ferry worked close together on new arrangements for the album.
