The Crucible, Waitress & American Psycho to Hit Broadway This Spring; Tickets Already Rising
With the 2016 Tony Awards right around the corner, the last of the new shows will be beginning previews or opening in the next few months to secure eligibility for the for the 2015-2016 Broadway season. Along with the opening of new and revival productions, some shows must close to give way for the new ones taking their place. The shows closing prior to April are Misery (2/14), A View From The Bridge (2/21), Allegiance (2/14), and Noises Off (3/13). Each of these shows has made the eligibility for the Tonys since they all opened from June 2015 and were still active during the season time. The Crucible | Previews: 3/1 | Opening: 3/31 | Walter Kerr Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $234
The Crucible, which has been on the Great White Way five times in previous years, will star Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo in her Broadway debut. The classic novel turned play takes place during the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s. As it stands, tickets for The Crucible are averaging $234 on the secondary market.
Shuffle Along (or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All that Followed) | Previews: 3/15 | Opening: 4/28 | Music Box Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $248
With the longest title soon to be on Broadway, Shuffle Along is based on the 1921 musical of the same name and tells the story of what happened when the musical came to Broadway and how its journey brought it there in the first place. Starring Audra McDonald and Billy Porter, Shuffle Along tickets are averaging $248 prior to beginning performances at the Music Box Theatre.
The Father | Previews: 3/22 | Opening: 4/14 | Closing: 6/12 | Samuel J. Friedman Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $175
The Father, starring Frank Langella, is making its Broadway debut this March. The story focuses on Andre, a retired dancer, and his loss of touch with reality. The show opens April 14, and tickets to see The Father are rising on the resale market. As it stands, tickets are averaging $175.
Waitress | Previews: 3/25 | Opening: 4/24 | Brooks Atkinson Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $253
Waitress, based on the film of the same name, has been on the radar for a while with a score written by pop singer Sara Bareilles and stars Jessie Mueller in the leading role of Jenna. The story follows Jenna, a pregnant waitress in the south who is in an abusive marriage and searching for her happy ending. Tickets to see the Waitress are averaging $253 on the secondary market.
American Psycho: The Musical | Previews: 3/24 | Opening: 4/20 | Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $273
After a successful run in London, American Psycho will head to Broadway on April 20. The new tuner, which stars Matt Smith (Doctor Who), is based on the 2000 film of the same name. American Psycho is set during the height of the 1980s era of Wall Street greed, and follows Patrick Bateman through his serial killing sprees. The production will feature the Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening composer Duncan Sheik, as well as playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Tickets for American Psycho are averaging $273 on the resale market.
Nerds, A Musical Dot-Comedy | Previews: 3/31 | Opening: 4/21 | Longacre Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $200
With recent popular movie productions hitting the big screen, it was only a matter of time before the story of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates found its way to Broadway. Nerds, A Musical Dot-Comedy explores the backgrounds of computer entrepreneurs Steve Jobs and Bill Gates and the rise of the computer world. No cast has been set at this time, but it shouldn't be too long before this show gets its stars. As it stands, tickets to see Nerds, A Musical Dot-Comedy are averaging $200.
Tuck Everlasting | Previews: 3/31 | Opening: 4/26 | Broadhurst Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $205
Tuck Everlasting will make its way to Broadway at the end of April. The story, which is based on the 1975 children's book by Natalie Babbitt, was first adapted to featured Disney film in 2002. The story follows Winnie Foster and her magical journey with the eternally youthful Tuck family. Tickets for Tuck Everlasting are currently averaging $205 on the secondary market.
Long Day's Journey Into Night | Previews: 3/31 | Opening: 4/27 | American Airlines Theatre | Closing: 6/26 | Average Ticket Price: $303
Coming back for its sixth time on the Great White Way, Long Day's Journey Into Night tells the story of the dysfunctional Tyrone family. Written by the infamous Eugene O'Neill, this play is a classic and has drawn audiences since the 1950s. Tickets for Long Day's Journey Into Night are some of the most expensive on the secondary market, and are now averaging $303.
Fully Committed | Previews: 4/2 | Opening: 4/25 | Lyceum Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $230
Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson will take the stage this spring as the lone star of Fully Committed. This one-man comedy will see Fergusson take on the role of Sam, as well as 40 additional characters. Fans of the ABC sitcom will undoubtedly flock to see Ferguson's performance, and tickets for Fully Committed are already rising fast. As it stands, tickets are averaging $230 on the resale market.
Cirque du Soleil's Paramour | Previews: 4/16 | Opening: 4/7 | Walter Kerr Theatre | Average Ticket Price: $170
Cirque du Soleil's Paramour is a new tuner that is part musical part circus and tells the tale of a young poet forced to choose between love and art. Cirque du Soleil has held shows on both Broadway and off-Broadway in the past, and Paramour's upcoming residency will be held at the Lyric Theatre. The average ticket price for this tuner is relatively low compared to its competitors, as tickets for Paramour are averaging just $170.
