Tyne Daly Returning to Broadway in New Musical Directed by David Hyde Pierce

Tyne Daly, the Emmy Award-winning former Cagney and Lacey star known to theatergoers for her recent memorable turns in Broadway's Master Class and Mothers and Sons, will star in It Shoulda Been You, a new Broadway musical directed by Tony Award winner David Hyde Pierce.

With music and concept by Barbara Anselmi and book and lyrics by Pierce's husband Brian Hargrove, the show had a sold-out premiere in 2011 at George Street Playhouse in New Jersey with Tyne Daly in the cast and Pierce directing. It begins previews at Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre on March 17, 2015, with an official opening set for April 14, 2015.

Reviewing the George Street Playhouse production, the Star-Ledger's Peter Filichia wrote, "Granted, this hit does have an agenda; act two may not please conservatives. The rest of the population, however, will roar with laughter and cheer with unmitigated approval."

Co-starring with Daly is Tony Award-winner Harriet Harris (Present Laughter, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella), who appeared in the 2011 production as well. The cast also includes Sierra Boggess, David Burtka, Lisa Howard, Edward Hibbert and Steve Rosen.

As the press release describes it, It Shoulda Been You presents "a culture clash for the ages when two families from wildly different backgrounds come together to celebrate a wedding. As if the union wasn't complicated enough, the bride's ex-boyfriend arrives, bringing the wedding to a screeching halt and throwing both families into hysterical chaos. Plots are hatched, promises broken, secrets exposed--and the bride's resourceful sister is left to turn an unmitigated disaster into happily ever after."

This is Barbara Anselmi's first musical score to be produced on a New York stage. She has been the music director of a number of prestigious Off-Broadway productions, including The Roar of the Greasepaint--The Smell of the Crowd, Cabin in the Sky and most recently The Velveteen Rabbit at DR2 Kids Theatre produced by Daryl Roth. Roth is also a producer of It Shoulda Been You together with Scott Landis, Jane Bergère, Jayne Baron Sherman and John O’Boyle.
