'Self-Made Man: The Frederick Douglass Story' Quotes Abolitionist in Off-Broadway World Premiere

Off-Broadway's ArcLight Theatre will present the world premiere of Self-Made Man: The Frederick Douglass Story, adapted from the writings of Frederick Douglass and written and performed by Phil Darius Wallace, beginning November 18. The official opening is November 24 and the play runs through December 14.

Phil Darius Wallace is a Tennessee Shakespeare Company member and has performed there in The Glass Menagerie, Hamlet, Taming of The Shrew, As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. He can be seen on ABC's Nashville. But Wallace has also made a specialty of portraying historical characters, including Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Wright and Langston Hughes.

In Self-Made Man Wallace adapts Frederick Douglass' speeches, letters, autobiographies and other writings, taking "the audience on a journey through Douglass' life, dramatizing the heartbreak, humor, outrage and charisma that were embodied by the life of this slave-turned Abolitionist leader." Wallace portrays 14 different people who influenced the Abolitionist as he evolved into the father of the American civil rights movement.

Melania Levitsky directs the Nikita Productions presentation. Scenic design is by Angelina Margolis, lighting by Nastassia Jimenez, costumes by Katia Andreiez, sound design by Erik T. Lawson and musical composition by John McDowell.

Self-Made Man: The Frederick Douglass Story will be at The ArcLight Theatre, 152 W. 71 Street, New York City. Tickets are available online or by calling 866-811-4111.
