UPDATE: Placido Domingo Discharged from Hospital, Still Makes It to 'Il Postino' Performance

Nearly a week into his stay at a Madrid hospital, tenor, baritone, conductor and 72-year-old Los Angeles Opera administrator Placido Domingo was discharged on Saturday.

According to his spokeswoman, Nancy Seltzer, Domingo's doctors have prescribed no fewer than three weeks' worth of convalescence for the "pulmonary embolism" that resulted from "venous thromboembolic disease."

"I am very happy that I was released from the hospital and to be at home in Madrid for the next weeks with my family," read Domingo's official statement. "At the same time I am very disappointed not to be able to perform in my home city, but hopefully if my recovery goes well and I feel healthy, I can continue with my planned performance schedule next month."

Of course, this being Placido Domingo--the man who returned to the stage a mere 45 days after undergoing surgery for colon cancer in 2010--his plans began soon enough.

On Sunday, Domingo attended a piano dress rehearsal for Il Postino, the opera by his late friend Daniel Catan that he was scheduled to sing, starting Wednesday, at Madrid's Teatro Real. Domingo was supposed to reprise his performance as Pablo Neruda, the role he created when Il Postino debuted at his L.A. Opera.

Instead, the role of Neruda is to be sung by Vicente Ombuena.

Sources confirmed, too, that Placido Domingo stayed on for Il Postino's performance proper.

In fact, Domingo told the Spanish press: "I came because I wanted to see the debut of my son, Alvaro, who plays the role of Pablito."
