Bollywood's Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Somy Ali Break Taboos, Talk Depression & Abuse

Kalki Koechlin has played some tough scenes in her career, though none tougher than coming to terms with her past and the abuse she suffered as a child. She spoke to NDTV in detail about her past. Kalki said she spoke up not for sympathy or attention but to encourage people to speak up about abuse. Somy Ali happens to be breaking a few rules as well.

"I felt it was my mistake and so I kept it hidden for years." Kalki was quoted as saying, "If I had had the confidence or awareness to confide in my parents it would have saved me years of complexes about my own sexuality."

Kalki added that, no matter what, she wasn't going to hide her true self from society any longer.

Like Kalki, Deepika Padukone has also spoke at length about battling debilitating depression, an ailment she has learned how to deal with. For Deepika, the most important thing was coming clean and speaking about depression.

"In the first initial days, I cried in my room and then I had to go and talk in front of so many people with a smile on my face, like everything [was] okay."

Like Kalki, raising awareness for the issue is more important to Deepika than any self pity or attention she might get.

Former actor Somy Ali, who runs an organization (No More Tears) for abused immigrant women in the United States, has continued to speak about her own experiences of suffering abuse at the age of five.

"When I am invited for a talk at high schools and universities in the US, I share this with the students. I believe sharing my personal experiences would encourage others to speak out and not be ashamed about being a victim," Somy had stated in an interview.

.All three are working their hardest to make all of India and the world aware of these scary issues that affect millions.
