17-Year-Old Frances Tiafoe Climbs Tennis Rankings After Jay Z Signing

The next hot young player in tennis is making a splash on more than just center courts. 17-year-old Frances Tiafoe has the ability to become the best American tennis player in quite some time. And, through signing a contract with Jay Z and his sports agency, the world is going to be able to realize it as well. Tiafoe has been tearing it up on the Challenger Tour this season, racing up the world rankings with hopes to become a fixture on the APT world tour soon.

The addition of a young rising star in a sport not usually associated with hip-hop was an interesting move from Roc Nation Sports and Jay Z, but the move could pay huge dividends. WTOP knows exactly why this is a great fit for both player and agency:

"Just look at their roster of athletes. Not only is Tiafoe easily the youngest, he's the only tennis player. His profile, at first glance, doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the names. Surrounding Tiafoe on Roc Nation Sports' website are photos of 2014 NBA MVP Kevin Durant, Dallas Cowboys star receiver Dez Bryant and six-time All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano. Betting on Tiafoe means hoping to cash in on more than a single player, but on the future of American tennis."

Tiafoe isn't going to be content with just the representation of Jay Z. He tells Live Tennis Guide of his continued desire and drive:

"I've focused on staying tough and always competing; to never give up. That's a good trait since a young age. To go for your shots and take more risk. It pays off in the game today. Grinding only gets you so far. You get a good look and you have to go for it. You have to keep going. I'm improving, but I haven't accomplished what I want to do in tennis yet."

Do you think Tiafoe will continue his steady climb up the rankings this season? How will the signing with Jay Z and Roc Nation Sports affect his game? Tell us your thoughts below.
