The Atlanta Falcons have rid themselves of a parasite to their team. Former Notre Dame standout Prince Shembo, who was investigated while at the university, was already on a short leash with the Falcons. Prince was a fourth round draft pick in 2014, and now the Falcons fired Shembo after his latest altercation, which involved him having dog cruelty charges filed against him.
Shembo was investigated during his time at Notre Dame concerning his connection with the suicide of a woman who had accused Shembo of inappropriate behavior. With Shembo being cleared of any charges, the Falcons went ahead and took a chance on Shembo. But after news of him killing his ex-girlfriend's dog broke, the team needed to make a quick decision. With the team's history, the Falcons were quick to make the move and let go of the dog killer. ESPN has the statement the team released concerning their involvement with Shembo:
"We are aware of the charges that have been filed against Prince Shembo. We are extremely disappointed that one of our players is involved in something like this. Accordingly, we have decided to waive Prince Shembo."
The Falcons have a notorious reputation for dog-related incidents. Atlanta had its organization turned upside down when, they lost their former superstar quarterback Michael Vick to even worse charges. The Washington Times explains how the horrible situation the Falcons previously dealt with is affecting the current club:
"The case was especially sensitive to a franchise that lost star quarterback Michael Vick after he was charged with running a dogfighting ring in 2007. Vick wound up serving federal prison time and never played again for the Falcons."
Other than waiving Shembo the Falcons are going to have to do more work to win back over their fans.
