‘Death Note’ to Have TV Series, Live Action and American Adaptations

Death Note, which saw a 12 volume manga, 3 live action films and a 37-episode TV anime will be taking on its last field, a live action TV series to add to its portfolio. The new show will feature an all new story not found in the manga or any of the films. The title is a little more obscure and not as popular in the US as it is Japan. Death Note TV series will start airing on Sundays in July on Japanese TV. Meanwhile, Warner Brothers continues to work on an animated version of the series

The original Tsugumi Ohba/Takeshi Obata manga concerned a teenager named Light. He finds a notebook with which he could put people to death just by writing their names in it. Light begins a crusade against the criminals of the world. The 12-volume manga ran from 2003- 2006 in the magazine Shonen Jump. The manga has also inspired a musical.

Popular Japanese model Hinako Sano will play Misa Amane in the show. Misa, in Death Note, dedicates her life to the main character Light, played by Masataka Kubota. The 26 year old actor is best known for his role in the film series Gachiban. He will play a more grown Light. In the manga, Light is a high school student. In the TV show, he will be starting his first year at university.

As for the American feature film debut, there has been very little headway in bringing the dark manga to the silver screen in America. For a while, Shane Black was attached to direct but he has since moved on. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that You're Next director Adam Wingard could join.

Are you looking forward to the American adaptation? Leave us a comment and tell us what's on your mind. We'd love to hear from you.
