Star Wars 7 Spoilers: Why George Lucas Didn't Want to Return to Direct 'The Force Awakens'

George Lucas is credited with creating one of the best universes in all of film, Star Wars. With all of the animosity over the choices that he made when filming the Star Wars prequels, and the praise and success over the originals, why did he choose not to come back?

There is no denying that George Lucas is the father of one of the most popular film universes in film. Although he has only receive minor success in his other film, Star Wars remains just as popular as the day that it first released, if not more. It has been a rough road for the famed director. He has been revered as a science fiction God, and he has been smited by the same fans that love him due to some of the decisions that he made when filming the Star Wars Prequels.

Lucas was approached about filming the new trilogy, but turned down the role. Some fans were left scratching their heads. How could someone who created something so precious just let it go? It is no secret that he was not at the top of his game when he filmed the prequels, and has defended his decisions many times much to the disdain of Star Wars fans. There is no doubt that fans want to know why he has turned down returning to direct the films, although they are all excited to see the SW Universe tackled by a fresh set of eyes.

According to George Lucas, he not only didn't want to direct another Star Wars, he doesn't want to return to any film that could be a big budget film or be mainstream. "You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized, and people try to make decisions about what you're going to do before you do it. Y'know, it's not much fun, and you can't experiment; you can't do anything. You have to do it a certain way. I don't like that, I never did. I started out in experimental films, and I want to go back to experimental films, but of course no one wants to see experimental films."

It sounds like Lucas is a little scorned over the fan reception that he received over his prequel missteps. Whether Lucas is happy with the direction of the new films or not, J.J. Abrams has made fans happy once again. The final fan stance has yet to be decided, and will have to wait to see their reactions after seeing the finished film when it hits theaters on December 17th. We all need to remember, the prequels looked good from the trailers as well.
