Johnny Depp is known for the quirky characters he plays. One of his most iconic roles is Captain Jack Sparrow from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. So it’s no wonder that Sparrow is the costume he wears when he visits sick children in the hospital. Depp has great sympathy for the kids and what their parents are going through. Depp went through a similar situation when his daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, who is making headlines for coming out as sexualy fulid, nearly died years ago.
Johnny Depp knows what it is like to be a parent with a child in critical condition. Back in 2008 his daughter Lily-Rose, then 7, nearly died from an ecoli infection. Depp opened up about the horrific experience during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, telling the host (via Huffington Post):
"I've known darkness in my life, but that was the darkest period ever."
Depp must relive this experience a little every time he visits a sick child in the hospital. Still that doesn’t stop him from throwing on his Jack Sparrow grab and heading towards the bedsides of sick and dying children, as Depp added:
"I've always kind of done these visits, but after that the visits became more and more important. Because the kids, bless them, you know they're so strong, they're so courageous -- but the parents are the ones who are slowly dying. And to be able to bring a smile or a giggle to these people is -- it means everything in the world to me."
