Kelli O’Hara has been chosen to be the national spokesman for the Theatre in Our Schools (TIOS) Campaign. The campaign is a joint effort from The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) and the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE). O’Hara will be actively raise public awareness of the value of theatre education & quality programs for all students. O’Hara just might be the perfect person to shine light on the won the 2015 Best Actress in a Musical for her role in The King and I. O’Hara is also up for a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album meaning all eyes are bound to be on her.
March is a good time for the arts. The Americans for the Arts-sponsored Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. from March 7-8. March also serves as the official month for Music in Our Schools and Youth Art Month. So the Theatre in Our Schools campaign should be right at home.
O’Hara knows the importance of having a good teacher as she praised one of her old mentor's, saying via press release:
“Education is the most essential tool we can use in order to lead a full and passionate life. Fortunately, I was given a great arts education at Deer Creek High School, where my dream was supported and shaped by drama teacher, Dixie Lee Jordan. She taught me what it meant to love art, to embrace differences, to break down walls of insecurity, and to grow as an actress and as a person.”
March isn’t the only month worth celebrating. This April O’Hara, Victoria Clark , Matthew Morrison and the rest of the original Broadway cast of The Light in the Piazza are coming together for a special one night only reunion performance. The special April 4 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater as a benefit for The Lincoln Center Theater. Tickets are limited and are priced between $90 and $150.
