Damien Chazelle's 'La La Land' Premiere Featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling Pushed Back

It's been announced that Damien Chazelle's next film, entitled La La Land and starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, will be pushed back from its original release date in July. Now, the movie is expected open in theaters later this year on December 16.

Originally slated to premiere July 15, La La Land will now open to limited release on December 2 with a wider premiere in all theaters later in the month. Chazelle, who bagged an Oscar nom last year with his conservatory drama, Whiplash, cites that his next film is a love letter to Los Angeles.

Chazelle wrote and directed the movie. The film, which will star Mr. Gosling and Ms. Stone as two star-crossed lovers, posits the duo in the city of angels, where Sebastian (Gosling) is a musician who meets and falls for the struggling actress Mia (Stone).

The idea, perhaps, is something more of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, making it a unique depiction for the current times.

Chazelle previously said of his film:

"There's an incredible romanticism in L.A. that you don't always see when you're stuck in traffic on the 405. I wanted to make a big love letter to the city and focus on that push and pull that all young artists experience, between dreams and reality, which old Hollywood musicals are so good at expressing. I just love the idea of a whole emotional arc told purely visually and musically. And it's a city that's so filled with dreamers, most of whom won't make it. I think there's something poetic about that."

It's also been noted that the reason for the change in dates is due to competing premieres, which include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the Will Smith film, Collateral Beauty.

Nonetheless, hopefully the new debut date will proceed unchanged. In the meantime, check out Gosling on Saturday Night Live below.
