Audra McDonald, who is known to many as Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC’s Private Practice, graces the April 2016 cover of Essence magazine. McDonald is a six time Tony Award winner for her roles in various plays and musicals, including Carousel (Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical), Master Class (Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play), Ragtime (Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical), Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill (Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play). Now, as her new play, Shuffle Along is heading into Broadway previews, McDonald is talking about staying humble after winning so many honors. In the issue McDonald discuss what it was like winning six Tony awards, telling the publication:
"Winning was surreal, a totally out-of-body experience… I thought I would feel different -- that I would finally figure out how to organize my underwear drawer. I’m grateful and blown away by it all, but I’m still me. I still have work to do.”
The April issue of Essence featuring Audra McDonald will be available on newsstands on April 18th. Shuffle Along opens for preview on March 15.
Shuffle Along also stars Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter and will be performed at the Music Box Theater, located 239 West 45th Street.
