Sara Bareilles has been a lifelong fan of musical theater. However, that didn’t make the transition from pop-artist to Broadway composer and lyricist any easier. Recently, the “Love Song” singer turned Waitress writer opened up about how she had to adjust her ways to make it on The Great White Way.
Recently, Sara Bareilles confided in the NYTimes about how she had to feet when writing Waitress, admitting:
“It actually took me a long time to say that I love this project. It was very hard; it was confusing; it was foreign. I think I was having a little bit of an out-of-body experience with it for maybe the first year of working on this show.”
However, Bareilles found that it was quite worth the effort, adding:
“Some of that is related to the sheer man-hours that it’s required of me. I’ve never worked on anything this hard, and this long, and this sincerely.”

Waitress has a book written by Jessie Nelson. Sara Bareilles provides music and lyrics. Lorin Latarro serves as choreographer. Diane Paulus is directing.
Sara Bareilles’ musical adaptation of Waitress goes into previews on March 25, 2016 and officially opens on April 24, 2016 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on 256 W. 47th St.
