American Psycho the Musical opened up for previews last night on Broadway, but the show can be in your living by this afternoon. The Original London Cast Recording of American Psycho the Musical, starring Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, is out today. At long last the soundtrack to the 2013 London production has been released in America.

Recently, Duncan Sheik spoke to Billboard about his approach to composing the music for American Psycho the Musical:

“I definitely tried to use a lot of gear and technology from that era, specific drum machines and synthesizers that were popular around that time. I’m not being slavish to the era in the same way that Spring Awakening is certainly not slavish to its era, but I am playing with some of the tropes and sounds that people would have been messing with making pop music at that time.”

Sheik also spoke being struck with the inspiration for the theme, saying:

"When I re-read the book [in] 2009, I had one of those lightbulb-over-the-head moments where I thought, this will be really cool to create a piece of musical theater where the whole sonic palette was electronic music because basically all these characters were going out to nightclubs in New York City in the mid-to-late 80s. It was when early house music and early techno and EDM from the U.K. and Europe was starting to happen here in New York. I remember that time really well because I was sneaking into those same clubs as a teenager."

American Psycho the Musical Original London Cast Recording is out now from Concord Recorders.

American Psycho the Musical  starring Ben Walker is currently playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre located at 236 West 45th Street. Tickets are on sale now at
