'Fun Home' Musical, Off-Broadway Hit and Pulitzer Finalist, to Open on Broadway in Spring 2015

Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron's multi-award-winning Off-Broadway hit Fun Home will move to Broadway in April 2015.

Sam Gold, who directed the Off-Broadway production at the Public Theater, will return, with musical direction by Chris Fenwick, lighting design by Ben Stanton, choreography by Danny Mefford, set and costume design by David Zinn and sound design by Kai Harada.

Previews begin April 4, 2015 at Circle in the Square Theater prior to an official opening April 22.

Based on Alison Bechdel's award-winning graphic novel, Fun Home also won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Off-Broadway Musical, Best New Musical from the Off Broadway Alliance, and other awards, plus eight Drama Desk nominations. It ran from October 2013 through January 2014, including several extensions.

June Thomas in Slate called Fun Home "the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian." The show recounts Bechdel's early years, particularly her relationship with her father, coming out to her parents, and dealing with her father's suicide. It does so by depicting "Alison" at three different stages of life--childhood, late teens, and middle age--portrayed by three different actresses.

Broadway casting has not been announced. The Public Theater production starred Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris and Tony nominee Judy Kuhn, as well as 10-year-old Sydney Lucas. Lucas made history by becoming the youngest performer ever to win an Obie Award.
