Soul Collective The Suffers Release New EP 'Make Some Room,' Set Out on West Coast Tour in February

The Suffers, the award-winning, 10-piece soul collective from Houston, have recently released their new EP Make Some Room, and after doing so they will set out on a West Coast tour starting in February.

The Suffers began in 2011 with music that combines American soul with rock 'n' roll. The Suffers's lineup was curated by bassist Adam Castaneda and vocalist/keyboardist Pat Kelly, who brought on trumpet player Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, guitarist Kevin Bernier, percussionist Jose "Chapy" Luna and drummer/vocalist Nick Zamora. Jazz saxophonist Cory Wilson and guitarist/vocalist Alex Zamora filled out the rhythm section, while front woman Kam Franklin topped off the group as the powerhouse vocalist.

The group’s popularity has given them the opportunity to play for large audiences at various different events and venues. The Suffers have played at the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience 2014, SXSW 2014, Dallas's Index and Homegrown festivals, Houston's Free Press Summer Festival, the Untapped Festival and CMJ Music Marathon 2014. The Suffers have since joined the ranks of Red Bull Sound Select and have remained a local favorite, accepting 11 Houston Press Music Awards in three years.

In a press release, lead singer Franklin explains what the songs on the new EP, released Jan. 20, mean to her and the band.

"These songs are just a small introduction to who we are. The inspirations are drawn from our families, culture and personal relationships. The live recording experience forced us to step away from what we were used to, but the end result is something we are all truly proud of,” she says.

The Suffers's Make Some Room can be streamed on Consequence of Sound.  For information on tour dates or to purchase tickets for their upcoming performances, check out the band's website.
