UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler Praised, GSP Return Rumors Revisited

Robbie Lawler's journey to the UFC Welterweight Championship belt was a rocky one. He has competed in several different promotions and racked up an impressive amount of fights. However, now that he has reached the upper echelon of fighters, he has been compared to the division's greatest fighters. Even though it will take a while before he is considered a legend, he is well on his way. Also, his unique style has made fans look back to reports on the return of Georges St-Pierre.

Lawler originally reigns from San Diego, California. He got his start in sports while at Bettendorf High School in Iowa. During his time there, he was recognized as an All-American in both wrestling and football.

Robbie originally got debuted in mixed martial arts in 2001 with the IFC. After that, he jumped from several different fighting promotions including Stikeforce, PRIDE, the IFL and King of the Cage.

Now, of course, he resides as the UFC's number one Welterweight. According to MMA Junkie, he has been compared to some of the UFC's greatest athletes:

"Robbie Lawler awaits news of his first defense, Lawler's had time to figure out what type of titleholder he wants to be...Whenever a new champion is crowned, comparisons are made to previous titleholders. With former champions such as Georges St-Pierre, Matt Hughes, Pat Miletich and others, Lawler's welterweight belt is arguably the UFC's most prestigious championship...It'll take plenty of time and hard work for Lawler to position his name alongside the previously mentioned champions."

For some, Lawler doesn't deserve his belt, and he leaves more to be desired. For those, we revisited a report from last year by MMA Weekly that rumored the return of iconic GSP:

"Former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre has yet to declare whether he has retired for good or whether he plans to eventually return to the Octagon...UFC president Dana White is insistent that his former champ will fight again, pointing to St-Pierre recently gaining medical clearance and returning to the gym. That, according to GSP, however, means little. St-Pierre's return to training comes after he had surgery on the left anterior cruciate ligament he tore during training..."
