Michael Shannon Returns to Broadway Joining Jessica Lange and Gabriel Byrne

Michael Shannon, the seasoned actor from Boardwalk Empire and Man of Steel will make his Broadway return in Long Day's Journey Into Night, joining Jessica Lange and Gabriel Byrne on stage, the Roundabout Theatre Company announced on Wednesday.

Michael Shannon's next role will be James Tyrone Jr. as he joins Jessica Lange (American Horror Story), Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) and John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom) in his return to the Broadway stage in Long Day's Journey Into the Night. He will be playing the son of former matinee idol, James Tyrone, in the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of the original Eugene O'Neill' play. According to The Hollywood Reporter,(THR) Jessica Lange will reprise her role as the drug-addicted Mary Tyrone, (for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2000) while Gabriel Byrne and John Gallagher Jr. will play James and Edmund Tyrone respectively.

Perhaps surprising to some, but surely not Classicalite fans, Shannon's is no stranger to the stage. He returns to Broadway after making his debut in 2012 in Grace, the comedic play that also starred Paul Rudd and Ed Asner. He is a longtime New York stage presence whose work ranges from modern classics (Uncle Vanya) to contemporary work (Bug, The Little Flower Of East Orange), according to Deadline. Naturally, Todd Haim and Roundabout would want to sign the Oscar nominee.

The production is being mounted in association with Lange's American Horror Story producer, Ryan Murphy, while Johnathan Kent is directing the revival. According to THR, "the last Broadway revival of O'Neill's 1956 play--the story of the Tyrone family and their battle to unearth and conceal a lifetime of secrets, and drawing heavily on the playwright's personal history--was a starry production in 2003, starring Brian Dennehy, Vanessa Redgrave, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robert Sean Leonard and was directed by Robert Falls."

The production, as part of Roundabout Theatre Company's 50th anniversary season, is slated to begin previews on March 31 (of 2016) before opening on April 19. It will run at the American Airlines Theatre in Times Square through June 26.
