SC Charleston Jazz Orchestra Opens Season 8 ‘When Swing Was King’ with Mayor John Tecklenburg

The Charleston Jazz Orchestra is getting ready to kick off their 8th season later this month. The first concert, When Swing Was King features music from iconic genre with special guest Charleston, SC Mayor John Tecklenburg.

On February 20 The Charleston Jazz Orchestra will get things swinging with the opening concert of season 8 with two concerts (5:00 PM and 8:00 PM). The concerts will features “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Minnie
the Moocher.”

Special guest Charleston, SC Mayor John Tecklenburg’s great uncle was Charleson Jazz great Fud
Livingston. Tecklenburg will be joining the Charleston Jazz Orchestra for two of Livingston’s songs, “I’m Thru With Love” and “I Found A New Baby.”

Livingston’s “I am Thru With Love” was famously recorded by Bing Crosby.

“The Charleston Jazz Orchestra is a twenty-piece big band made up of many of the finest musicians in the Charleston area. They all have extensive resumes and have played in a great variety of groups and venues around the world. CJO continues to refine its sound, now in its sixth season. It has firmly established itself as the Lowcountry’s resident big band ensemble. The orchestra debuted in March of 2008 under the name and direction of Charlton Singleton, its conductor and artistic director and it has been electrifying audiences ever since. Now in its seventh year, CJO has proven its place in Charleston music culture with continuous sold out shows. CJO performs all genres of jazz. Its repertoire comprises blues, swing, Afro Cuban, pop, straight ahead, Latin, the Great American Songbook and sacred.

“CJO is produced, presented and managed by Jazz Artists of Charleston (JAC), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote musical awareness and education, including the recognition and preservation of the history of jazz, in the City of Charleston through performances, special events and educational outreach.”
