Broadway Previews Tonight for Eugene O'Neill's ‘Hughie’ Staring Forest Whitaker & Frank Wood

Tonight, Monday Feb 8, Eugene O’Neill’s Hughie returns to Broadway for a limited run. Previews for the show kick off tonight with the official opening hot it’s heels on Feb 25. This two man play stars Oscar Winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) as Ernie Smith and and Tony Award winner Frank Wood (Side Man) as a night clerk.

Written by Eugene O’Neill in 1942, Hughie didn’t make it Broadway until 1964. The original Broadway production starred Jason Robards who was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance.

The official Broadway.com website for Hughie describes the story’s synopsis, reading:

“Summer, 1928. New York City. Beyond the bright lights of the Great White Way, a small-time gambler and big-time drinker returns to the faded hotel he has made his home. He encounters a new night clerk at the front desk and as the early hours of the morning give way to another dawn, he continues to chase the American Dream in order to survive. Hughie is a rarely seen theatrical masterpiece that beautifully investigates the themes of loneliness and redemption and offers a unique insight into the human condition.”

Hughie opens for previews tonight, Monday February 8. Hughie will officially open on February 25 and is scheduled to close on Jun 12.
