‘Walking Dead’ Michonne Danai Gurira’s ‘Eclipsed’ Play Debuts on Broadway

While Walking Dead fans were tuning in to watch Michonne chop a few zombies in half last Sunday, Michonne actress Danai Gurira’s play Eclipsed was debuting on Broadway. Guria wields both the pen and the sword, acting and writing.

The cast and creative team of Danai Guria’s Eclipsed is entirely female. Gurira spoke with the Cut about the show’s female voice during last Sunday’s opening, saying:

“This is a play I wanted a woman director for. I wanted a play where you took out the male voice and the male face, and said we’re going to extract, in this case, the antagonist and just make it about these women.”

The offical Broadway.com website for the show, details the plot as well and highlights the cast, reading:

“On the heels of her Academy Award®-winning performance in 12 Years a Slave, LUPITA NYONG'O comes to Broadway in ECLIPSED, ‘an extraordinary work that shines and shines’ (AP). The New York Times calls it ‘rare and powerful, with an all-star cast. The superb Lupita Nyong’o is one of the most radiant young actors to be seen on Broadway in recent seasons.’

ECLIPSED tells the story of five extraordinary women brought together by upheaval in their homeland of Liberia. It’s a stirring tale of hope, humor and resilience –- and the only new play by a woman on Broadway this season. Also starring PASCALE ARMAND (The Trip to Bountiful ), AKOSUA BUSIA (The Color Purple, film), ZAINAB JAH ('Law & Order: SVU') and SAYCON SENGBLOH (Motown ).”

Eclipsed is currently play at the Golden Theater located at 252 West 45th Street (between Broadway and 8th Avenue). For more information please visit eclipsedbroadway.com.
