Sonny Rollins to Release New Album 'Holding the Stage: Road Shows' in April

They say an artist creates until the bitter end, and the same may be true about legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins. It's been announced that Mr. Rollins will add another album to the canon, entitled Holding the Stage: Road Shows, Vol. 4 it will be released by Doxy Records on April 8.

The music, as has been par for Rollins lately, reaches into his vast archival recordings spanning a 33-year career period from 1979-2012. The album will be distributed by Sony Music Masterworks and its jazz imprint OKeh and includes 10 tracks.

Rollins, of course, put together these recordings to represent himself as a musician. For the elder player, Rollins has had many friends and colleagues depart this world and channels that in his curating decisions on the disc.

Per Downbeat:

"The personalness of the album is inherent in three Rollins originals that pay tribute to the saxophonist's departed friends and colleagues. The composition 'H.S.,' for Horace Silver, has been a concert staple since its appearance on Rollins' 1995 Milestone album Sonny Rollins +3. The version heard on Holding The Stage is taken from a 2006 concert with guitarist Bobby Broom, bassist Bob Cranshaw drummer Victor Lewis and percussionist Kimati Dinizulu."

This is fantastic news for Rollins fans abound, and there is sure to be more coming from him in the future, too.

Nonetheless, be on the look out for the new album due April 8 on digital outlets and April 15 on physical.

But for now, keep up with the jazz musician in a video clip provided below.
