Art Basel Hong Kong's 2024 Edition Set to be Its Biggest Event in Years, Signing Over 242 Exhibitors

Art Basel Hong Kong is gearing up to return to its pre-pandemic scale with its 2024 edition, matching its 2019 numbers with 242 total galleries from exhibitors across 40 countries and regions in differing continents of the world. More than half of these galleries are currently operating exhibitions all over Asia.

The full Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 exhibitor list was announced last Tuesday, Nov. 21, focusing on the art fair's three main segments.

Its main sector, labeled as "Galleries," features 200 galleries, while its "Discoveries" sector will feature 22 galleries that will comprise solo booths of new up-and-coming artists. Lastly, "Insights" will be made up of 20 galleries dedicated to historical demonstrations of artists hailing from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.

The chosen venue for the upcoming iteration of the event is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where the event will run from March 26 until March 30, however, March 26 and 27 are reserved for VIP previews.

Art Basel Hong Kong's Return to Pre-Pandemic Form

This sheer number of exhibitors is a leap from the previous 2023 edition, marking a 37 percent increase of around 65 exhibitors. Art Basel Hong Kong 2023's numbers were stifled because it was held directly after the city removed the prolonged COVID-19 travel restrictions that closed off Hong Kong from foreigners for three years.

A huge chunk of international galleries, that could not make it into the previous edition due to travel restrictions, will make their return in 2024. Specifically, 68 foreign exhibitors are coming back succeeding the hiatus, which includes Galerie Lelong & Co., Lisson Gallery, Matthew Marks Gallery, Kurimanzutto, Sprüth Magers, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Regen Projects, and Acquavella Galleries.

The next edition of the fair will also welcome 25 first-time exhibitors, which includes London-based Alison Jacques; New York's Chapter NY and Bortolami; Gallery 1957 with Accra and London bases; Fitzpatrick Gallery from Paris; LA and Mexico City-based Morán Morán; Nonaka-Hill also from LA; Almeida e Dale Galeria de Arte from São Paulo; Melbourne and Sydney's Station; and Dvir Gallery with bases in Brussels, Paris, and Tel Aviv.

Although Art Basel Hong Kong is just making its return to strength against the lockdowns that occurred in prior years, there are still some vacancies left by notable mainstays, namely: Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Sean Kelly, Goodman, and Marian Goodman, all of which are not on the list.
