After watching ten years of Sandra Oh playing Christina Yang on ABC's network medical drama Grey's Anatomy, fans of the show were, no doubt, just as sad to see Oh go as were her Shonda Rimes ran cast members. Sandra explained her reasons for quitting the successful series after a decade has to do with any relationship running its course--she wasn't growing so she's going. The talented actress reportedly wanted to take her wedding dress, lab coat and stethoscope home with her for good following the Season 10 finale, but rumor has it she was only allowed to pick one.
Sandra Oh is happy to have been able to appreciate and enjoy the comfort and stability that steady work on a network giant hit like Grey's Anatomy brings, but after so many years pretending to be the same person, the 42-year-old actress is convinced that it is time to move onto other things.
In an interview recorded by New America Media, Sandra explained that while she isn't upset or angry with her job's cast, crew or producers, it's still time for her to move past being Christina Yang on Grey's Anatomy:
"Grey's Anatomy, it changed all of our lives... It's like leaving a relationship in a really healthy way.
"It's like, 'OK, I'm not growing in this relationship anymore. I love you, I know you love me, and I have to move on.'...That's the closest thing I can relate it to, you know, because it's all about relationships."
Her long-time romantic interest on the show Kevin McKidd admits that he will not only miss Oh's warm face and demeanor, he will miss her drive and discipline as well:
"She's very vigilant...Her scripts are completely covered in Post-It notes.
"It's really inspiring to see a very established, confident actor very much engaged in the process."
According to the Washington Post Sandra was planning to take a lot more with her than just the memories of a lifetime of feudal labor with her from the show, but ABC had her scale the wish list down a bit:
"She wants to take a bunch of stuff with her from the Grey's Anatomy set, including the wedding dress Meredith had to cut her out of when Burke stood her up.
"So far, ABC has told her she can have one thing. She also wants her scrubs, her lab coat, and her stethoscope."
Oh come on ABC...hasn't Sandra done enough over the past decade to warrant throwing the $30 lab jacket in with the ruined wedding dress, or wereyou actually planning to recycle those?
