Broadway icon Barbra Streisand is looking to recruit one of the biggest contemporary acts of today Lady Gaga to her new film "Gypsy," the Tony Awarding winning musical according to Time Magazine.
Playbill.com said that Streisand during an interview about her latest film "The Guilt Trip," was considering approaching the pop icon to play the lead role in "Gyspy," a musical that she was looking to turn into a film.
Streisand is set to direct and star as the character Rose. Gaga would play the part of Louise, who transforms into Gypsy Rose Lee by the end of the musical according to Playbill.
Streisand has gotten Academy Award winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes to adapt the remake of "Gypsy," and said to be developing the project with Joel Silver who has been behind such films like "Sherlock Holmes" and "The Matrix," for Universal Pictures.
According to Playbil,l in a separate interview Streisand told EW that creative team was still working out one rights issue with the film.
Streisand dismissed claims that she might be too old for the part. "What's that got to do with anything?," she asked. "How old do I look to you? ...Age is a number."
"Gyspy," features music from Jule Styne and the lyrics were provided by Stephen Sondheim while Arthur Laurents wrote the book.
Streisand will be feature on PBS' "Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy," a new 90-minute documentary by Michael Kantor, will air as part of PBS' "Great Performances" series Jan. 1, 2013, at 9:30 PM ET.
Lady Gaga who is always attuned with other musical genres outside of her own was rumored to be looking to produce a jazz album with Billboard artist Tony Bennett earlier in the year.
