This is the year of Björk. The Icelandic singer has been making headlines with her critically acclaimed new album, Vulnicura and her upcoming shows at Governors Ball and Carnegie Hall. One of the most exciting things coming from the singer is her new retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, titled “Björk." She has recently released a trailer for the exhibition, which is sure to titillate fans of the often subversive icon.
The retrospective, which opens on March 8 and runs through June 8, will honor the artist's two-decade, eight-album-long career. The trailer is a nod to the exhibitions centerpiece, a sound and video installation based on her new song “Black Lake.”
Björk has co-written the installation's narrative with Icelandic writer, Sjón Sigurdsson, which will be her life biographically mixed with a bit of fiction. Also, as a part of her collaboration with the museum, Björk has donated her Biophilia app to MoMa's collection, which was one of the first examples of music being released through an app. It is the first app to be collected by the museum.
The trailer was directed by Andrew Thomas Huang and it features a semi-naked Björk with a sort of blue goo running through her body as she sings. It is strange, weirdly beautiful and very Björk.
Seems like every time you think you know what is coming next, she surprises you again. It makes sense that The Guardian's recently written article calls her the “queen of the avant garde.” Be sure to check out Björk’s MOMA retrospective which opens this upcoming March.
