Rob Lowe has gotten a flak about the title of his new hit Fox comedy, The Grinder, because of the similar named gay hookup app, Grindr. Well, Lowe is firing back at critics with his weapon of choice, Justin Theroux. That is right, while pointing out that the show is intentional titled Grinder to be funny, Lowe also blasted the names of other shows, like Justin Theroux’s The Leftovers. Lowe also embraced the app on Jimmy Kimmel Live, by making a commercial for it.
In the mock ad, Rob Lowe touts the use of Grindr as great way meet other guys who want to watch The Grinder, saying (transcribed via E!):
"Every Tuesday night millions of Americans are watching The Grinder alone. Imagine having to laugh out loud nonstop for 30 minutes straight all by yourself. But now imagine you don't have to thanks to this very cool app I discovered called Grindr."
Lowe recently spoke to Vulture about the title of the show, mocking some of the critic that the show has gotten because of the app:
“Oh, this is my favorite thing! ‘Oh my God, was nobody minding the store there? I mean, how did that happen? Did they not realize that The Grinder is a gay dating app? Or a sandwich? I mean, God, that’s so stupid.’ Uh, no kidding! It’s a comedy. News flash: We’re being funny on purpose. You can all rest easy. I also want to say, in a world of a show called The Leftovers, in a world of a show called Numb Threers [ CBS’s Numb3rs] , whatever the hell that show is called, do you really want to tell me The Grinder is the worst title you’ve ever heard? Really, you wanna go there? 'Cause I will go there! Numb Threers. The Leftovers. No one wants leftovers! I love the people at HBO, and I love Justin Theroux. Terrible, horrible title! Cold leftovers! They wanna get in my face with Grinder?”
