Everyone’s favorite sponge may be heading to the Great White Way. Nickelodeon has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that a SpongeBob SquarePants musical is currently in the works. Though the show location has not been announced, it is rumored that Nickelodeon is hoping for a Broadway run. The show is said to feature a mixture of classical and contemporary music, with music from Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum and John Legend for the score. The production is set to be directed by Tina Landau, who is currently directing the off-broadway show Big Love.

Nickelodeon’s big reveal happened at the network's recent upfront, where it showed off a potential opening number for the project titled “Bikini Bottom Day.”

The animated series, which debuted in 1999 on the network, was created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. Set in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom, the series follows the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants and his many sea friends. A film adaptation of the show was released in 2004, with a live-action sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, released Feb. 6.

So far, no details about the cast or theater or dates have been announced.
